WHY GUN VIOLENCE IN EAST HARLEM?

The numbers speak for themselves.

Though this data is useful, it does not capture the lived impact of gun violence and don’t reflect all the incredible work that Harlem’s communities have done to counteract this trend.

Below is a table reporting shooting incidents and victims in Harlem precincts as of 8/15/21, compared to the same period last year. Overall shooting incidents and shooting victims have increased compared to 2020, which itself was a historically high period for shootings in NYC.

Shooting incidents by precinct

A shooting incident is defined as a shooting event where a person has been injured or killed by gunfire and does not include “shots fired” incidents with no known victim. A single shooting incident can have more than one victim.

OUR TRIBE OF SUPPORTERS

We would like to give a shoutout to the Neighborhood STAT Team at Wagner, Neighborhood Safety Initiative, NYC Office of Neighborhood Safety, Progress Playbook, Four the Youth by the Youth, and our fearless facilitators, Marcus Scurry, Marcus Johnson, and Lloyd Cambridge for supporting and guiding us through the process of launching Youth of Change to end gun violence in East Harlem.

ABOUT START AN EMPIRE

Start an Empire is an experiential social entrepreneurship program designed by Progress Playbook to teach youth how to start a business by practicing the startup experience. Participants receive business training, identify a social problem to solve in their neighborhood, develop a business plan, and practice the startup experience by creating a product and activating their solutions for the neighborhood problem that they identified at a local pop-up shop.
